Indian Furniture Contemporary Indian Style Furniture

European emigrants to India during the 16th and 17th centuries discovered the skill of Indian craftsmen in reproducing any kind of Indian furniture.

It was soon discovered that Indian craftsmen had a remarkable ability to reproduce with uncanny precision any article of furniture, as long as some kind of model was provided.

One characteristic of Anglo Indian furniture is the extensive use of wooden pegs in joints or to attach veneers. These were devised because the casein adhesive used in India in place of glue tended to dry out. Another quality of Indian furniture of the Raj is the use of odd pieces of ivory or wood that were pegged together to build up a section of a larger piece. And the most distinctive and easily recognizable trait is the extensive use of caning in chairs and settees, this was done to make the furniture as cool and comfortable as possible in the intense heat.
